As usual with my research I always seem somehow sidetracked. Fashion plates have inevitably intrigued me.
These particular ones are of chapeaus, head coverings and coiffures for both interior and outdoor wear. Each one more feminine than the first, spread over three decades in the 19th century.
Bonnets and hats accentuated with broderie, velvet ribbons, soutache trim and lush feathers created a vision of loveliness.
The bottom one dates Saturday May 28,1870. 138 years ago this was the fashion in hair. Delicate in detail, often decorated with flowers, ribbons and braids they were samples for enhancing and demonstrating one's beauty.
The secret is that true beauty lies within.

We've been watching Masterpiece's Cranford and Daniel Deronda and I've been swept away with hats and hair and the elegance of those times... right now, it's a headband to hold back my short hair... at least it has a shiny crystal or two!!!
These are beautiful plates Susan. True beauty really does lie within, but I have always been attracted to things for the head/hair -- ribbons, barrettes, hair bands, flowers, hats, scarves...I think it's one of the prettiest ways we can add something as an adornment.

It would be such fun to begin wearing wreaths of flowers upon one's coiffure! For now I'll stick with a tiny side braid, just thin enough to befuddle onlookers, but soon, the flowers...
