My job (associate to the auctioneer) affords me many an opportunity to discover items that even I am slightly puzzled by...
Whether an arrangement of consignments in the church hall or the adventure of discovering and cataloging an estate tucked away for generations sometimes the beauty of a find is quite breathtaking. Many of these items have been showcased here over time, while others await unearthing.
Shown are 3 objects that have a purpose that you are to guess.
The first correct answer shall win a copy of 'Bright Star' on DVD. It is the newly released story of a secret love affair between the English poet John Keats and the girl next door Fanny Browne. A moving and touching tale indeed...
For the most interesting or shall we say entertaining answer the beautiful book 'Socks From the Toe Up' by Wendy D. Johnson.

Ditto Christine, she beat me. I had to wait to ask my husband if he recognized them. I thought they were possibly bud vases, but then I thought that was too easy.

What an interesting occupation - I'd love to be sorting through interesting old treasures. One of the things that I miss about Ontario is being able to go out of an afternoon to hunt through antique shops. I miss auctions too. There are auction houses here but they deal with the more expensive and exotic items. I'd like attend an estate auction or a farm auction again.

I think the two on the left may be bud vases and the one on the right a bottle stopper ... but I'm probably way off ... in any case they are really beautiful.

Oh what fun Susan! I see I'm not the first with my guess... but I have a beautiful lavender glass bud vase given to me on my wedding day by a beloved aunt that looks very similar to the one on the right side of the photo. So that's my guess as well.. bud vases. (: xxVicki
Well, of course Christine Crocker is correct, and indeed, I too have seen such lovelies, but it stands to reason that they too resemble bottle stoppers.

They are indeed very lovely and delicate looking, so my guess is they were fashionable ear trumpets to aid the hearing of fine elderly ladies in the 19th century! Hey, I would buy one! :)

I think thoses vases are from old car! I hope to find one some day. And if I have car some day, it will be car from 30's! :)
ooooh....what fun! Those glass items look like what my grandma calls "tussy mussies"...she gave me one but its brass. They are pretty little 'vases' for a better word that you put a little nose-gay bouquet in and sit on a table to be pretty. These glass ones are very pretty! If that's what they are ;)
Well, my first thought was rosebud or posy holders, too - which is a bit unoriginal! The one on the right looks as if it might be a stopper for a port decanter, as the bottom looks solid. And maybe the middle one is for holding toothpicks. Which leaves the green one still as a posy vase to put in some sort of holder? I am afraid that I can't be more entertaining though!

You must love your job, It is the dream job for sure. I was thinking too that they were little vase or stoppers for apothacary jars.
What a fun job! But sad, too? I always think estate sales are so sad...but I bet you have opportunities to see the most interesting things...I say vases too..
