Timeless

Having spent a great deal of time in libraries, resource rooms and halls of genealogy the lure of leather bound volumes stacked in unison upon the shelves is intriguing.

The smell of an old book is timeless just like the contents emanating from its pages.

'Tis not musty or dusty, lost or forlorn. Perhaps it is the lingering scent of human hands that have turned its aged pages to partake of its wisdom and translations within.

Susan,
I love old books too. Before my mother-in-law passed away, she gave me two very old books that her grandfather (who was a teacher) had in his library. One of the books was Pilgram's Progress and the other Uncle Tom's Cabin. Both books have no publishing date in them so I do not know how old they are. The covers are worn and faded with pages that are yellow and smell musty. I love them in their current state far better than if they had been in pristine condition.

I love to read old books. It's nice to wonder where they have been, and who has read them before me.

I married a bibliophile and subsequently become one myself. Love that musty, dusty smell. Uh, referring to books, not my husband! :)

I AGREE. BOOKS, BOTH OLD AND NEW, HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AN IMPORTANT PART OF MY LIFE. FORTUNETLY, MY DAUGHTERS (I HAVE THREE) ALSO LOVE TO READ AND COLLECT OLD BOOKS, NOT JUST TO READ, BUT TO ADMIRE THE PATINA THAT VINTAGE BOOKS AQUIRE.

Yes, I think there is something very special about old books. I enjoy the thought that they were cherished by someone else before me. I think they make wonderful gifts and they are beautiful in library.

Oh, I SO agree. I love the look and smell of old paper. I recently went to the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport, Maine and read a letter written by one of my great-grandfathers in 1831. It was a wonder to behold, and think of him dipping a pen in the old brown ink.

Just to turn those pages... is a door to another world... another time...
